“Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is a vibrant, heart-warming musical that has been captivating audiences since its debut in Sheffield. My daughter saw it years ago in London and came home raving about it, insisting that I had to see it. Naturally, I was thrilled when I learned it was touring and making a stop in Milton Keynes.
The story follows 16 year old Jamie New (Ivano Turco), who dreams of becoming a drag queen and attending his high school prom in a dress. Despite facing opposition from his careers teacher, Miss Hedge (Georgina Hagen), and the school bully, Dean (Jordan Ricketts), Jamie’s journey is both funny and moving, making the audience cheer for him every step of the way.
I was particularly touched by the bond between Jamie and his mother, Margaret (Rebecca Mckinnis). Her love and support for Jamie are beautifully portrayed, especially through her powerful song “He’s My Boy.” Her vocals were a highlight for me, drawing me to the edge of my seat to fully absorb her performance. Margaret goes to great lengths to support Jamie, including buying him his first pair of red high heels and shielding him from the painful truth that his father doesn’t accept him.
Jamie also finds a mentor in the fabulous Hugo (Kevin Clifton), a former drag queen who helps and guides Jamie as he prepares for his first drag show. Jamie’s best friend, Pritti (Talia Palamathanan), also offers unwavering support despite facing her own challenges as a Muslim, exemplifying the true essence of friendship and belief in one another.
I couldn’t take my eyes off Jamie. The only way to describe him is like seeing a friend in love—you can’t fake that kind of joy and passion; it shines from within, radiating through Jamie’s every move.
In conclusion, “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is an inspiring musical. Whether you’re a fan of musicals or simply looking for a compelling story, this production is a must-see. Truly, everyone is talking about Jamie!
