Review: Disney’s Aladdin at Milton Keynes Theatre by Lara Wadey

Disney’s Aladdin is lighting up the stage at Milton Keynes Theatre. The production is bring to life the beloved 1992 animated film, telling Aladdin’s story as he seeks true love. I was delighted to see that the production remains faithful to the original story we all know and love.

It tells the story of a young street urchin named Aladdin (Gavin Adams) who lives in the city of Agrabah. Aladdin dreams of a better life, but is forced to steal to survive. One day, he meets Princess Jasmine (Desmonda Cathabel), who has run away from the palace to escape an arranged marriage.

The show opens with the incredible Genie (Yeukayi Ushe) performing “Arabian Nights,” setting the stage for an evening of wonder and adventure. Fans of Aladdin will recognize classic songs like “Friend Like Me”, “A Whole New World” and “Prince Ali; as well as new songs that had me listening to every word. I am still singing away to myself as I write this. With its exceptional cast, colorful costumes and live orchestra, the show really does whisk you away on its magic carpet.

I love the chemistry between Gavin Adams and Desmonda Cathabel bring Aladdin and Jasmine to life, you can’t help but feel warm and smile to yourself. For me, Yeukayi Ushe steals the show as the energetic Genie, I could have watched him for hours, he was faultless! His charisma and humor gave off Robin Williams vibes, from the film back in 1992.

The production blends Disney’s magic with feeling of pantomime charm. Aladdin is a must-see escape for theatergoers of all ages. It’s everything you’ve ever imagined.

Aladdin runs until Sunday 19th May at Milton Keynes Theatre. Tickets are available here or by calling the Box Office on 0844 871 7627.
